Tesla Reminds Employees it’s Time to Be Back in the Office Full-Time

Following Tesla and CEO Elon Musk’s move to end remote work, a new automated email shows that the automaker is now monitoring employee attendance at the office.

Tesla is notifying employees who haven’t used their badges to get into the office in a while that they’re expected to be back in the office full-time, as detailed in an email posted on Blind by an unnamed Tesla employee, later verified with another employee by Business Insider.

The email said, “This is an automated notification. You are receiving this email because there is no record of you using your badge to enter a Tesla facility on at least 16 days over the 30-day period ending on June 28.”

The email continued, “As a reminder, all employees are expected to be back in the office, fulltime. We realize that there are various reasons why you may not have badged in, including illness, vacation or traveling for business. Whatever the case, please clear the reason for you absence with your manager by email, with a copy also sent to absence@tesla.com.”

Blind is an anonymous platform that lets verified employees talk about company issues, using a company email to verify their identities.

In response to the email from Tesla, another employee posted on Blind, saying, “This feels wrong. I can’t quite put it into words why it bothers me, it feels like it’s an overstep. It’s controlling. It’s disrespectful.”

The news comes after Tesla employees at the Fremont factory said there wasn’t enough room to return to the office, citing a lack of physical desk space and parking spots.
