Tesla is Working to Resume Production at Gigafactory Shanghai
Tesla said on Thursday that the company is trying its best to keep production going at its Gigafactory in Shanghai as it complies with China’s COVID-19 prevention measures — reports Yahoo Finance.
“We are actively cooperating with the government’s requirements for nucleic acid testing and other epidemic prevention requirements, and at the same time are doing our best to ensure production, overcoming difficulties together,” the electric vehicle (EV) maker said in a statement sent to Reuters.
As previously reported by Tesla North, the company on Wednesday notified employees and suppliers that it would suspend production at Giga Shanghai for two days in accordance with directives from the Chinese government designed to curb the country’s largest COVID-19 outbreak in two years.
Pausing production at Giga Shanghai for an extended period of time could cost Tesla dearly. The factory produced 59,845 cars in January and 56,515 in February, which comes out to almost 2,000 units per day.
In a separate notice issued to suppliers on Wednesday, Tesla also asked them to prepare workers to live, sleep, and eat at the factories in an arrangement similar to China’s “closed-loop management” process. Apple supplier Foxconn was allowed to restart some operations at its Shenzhen factory on Wednesday under the same arrangement.
