Tesla Model Y Sales Surge to No. 2 Spot in California, Ready to Overtake Toyota Camry
Tesla’s Model Y compact crossover SUV is seeing sales surge in its home state of California, reports CNBC’s Squawk Box.
Based on data from the California New Car Dealers Association, the Model Y dominated in 2021 car sales, surging to the number two spot, beating the Honda Civic and just trailing slightly behind leader the Toyota Camry.
Sales figures show the Camry at 61,599 car sales in 2021, with the Model Y at 60,394, and the Civic in third at 59,818 sales, while Toyota’s RAV4 at 59,153. Tesla’s Model 3 sedan is in the fifth spot at 53,572.
The Camry, Civic and RAV4 are popular gas vehicles seen as economical vehicle choices. The Model Y starts at $60,990 USD.
According to CNBC’s Phil Lebeau, he says in less than two years, Tesla’s Model Y has surged in the state, even without a federal EV tax credit available. “Yet the Model Y has blown by the competition,” said Lebeau, noting this was a warning to the rest of the auto industry.
California alone took 12.6% of Tesla’s record 2021 vehicle deliveries of 936,222, which saw 87% growth year-over-year. Check out the video below:
