Tesla Model 3 Performance vs. BMW i4 M50: 0-60 MPH Test [VIDEO]

In a recently published YouTube video, U.K.-based car purchasing and comparison platform carwow compared the Tesla Model 3 Performance and a BMW i4 M50 in a detailed review, and also pit them head-to-head in a 0-60 mph acceleration test.

The BMW i4 M50 is the ‘M Performance’ version of the base BMW i4 electric vehicle (EV) that was unveiled back in March. The i4 M50 sports a dual-motor AWD powertrain that produces 544 horsepower, and weighs 4883 lbs (2,215 kg).

The Model 3 Performance boasts a dual-motor AWD powertrain as well but packs a slightly lighter punch at just 490 horsepower of output. The Tesla is, however, markedly lighter than the BMW at 4071 lbs (1,847 kg).

The video host walks us through the exterior design of both cars, comparing each to the other before moving on to the interior, the infotainment system, and the User Interface. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto both work on the i4, whereas the Model 3 sorely lacks support for either.

Model 3 is more spacious in the rear than the i4, but the latter pulls some ratings back in creature comforts like covered cupholders in the rear armrest. The i4 has a bigger boot than the Model 3, and the hatchback design allows for even more storage space and ease of use. However, the BMW’s larger bonnet can, at times, slightly compromise forward visibility.

The i4 sports an 81 kWh battery with an observed real-world average of 2.3 miles/kWh with around 1500 miles on the odometer. The Model 3 Performance, on the other hand, has a 77 kWh that delivers an observed average of 3.4 miles/kWh after more than 18,500 miles travelled.

The Tesla Model 3 Performance also has price working in its favor, since it costs £59,990 or $58,990 USD while the BMW i4 M50 has a sticker price of £63,905 or $65,900 USD.

During carwow‘s test, the BMW managed to go 0-60 mph in 4.20 seconds, while the Model 3 Performance did the same in just 3.67 seconds. With Launch Control enabled, the host noted that the i4 struggles for road grip for the first second or so.

In another video from carwow earlier this month, the i4 M50 and Model 3 Performance competed against each other in a drag race. The i4 finished the 1/4 mile in 11.9 seconds, while the Tesla finished biting at its heels in 12.0 seconds.
