Tesla’s recent 2021.44.30 software update also includes a pop-up message when hopping into the vehicle in cold climates.

The message “Cold Weather Best Practices” shows up, urging owners to “Tap to learn more”. Once you do, you’re directed to your vehicle’s manual, specifically the Driving section that mentions “Cold Weather Best Practices”.

Tesla says you should pre-warm your vehicle cabin and battery using the Schedule feature (also available in the Tesla app), before your departure. By doing so while your vehicle is plugged in, you also can save range as well, instead of using up your battery’s energy to heat up the car while you drive.

The manual also highlights what to do when your black door handles are stuck due to ice—just make a fist and hammer that sucker, as shown in an animation:

Some Tesla owners in extremely cold climates are experiencing no heat after the 2021.44.30 software update, a bug that Tesla has acknowledged and says a fix is coming. But for those driving in cold weather with their families, then suddenly experiencing a loss of heat on a winter road trip, that can be startling and a cause for concern. Let’s hope the next software release is coming soon.
