Tesla Model 3, Model Y Become Most Popular Luxury Cars in the U.S.

Apart from absolutely dominating the electric vehicle (EV) market so far this year, the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y have also sold more units in the U.S. through October than any other ‘premium’ vehicles, including gas guzzlers from mainstay luxury automakers like Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW — reports Automotive News.

The news comes just two months after Tesla announced the Model 3 had become the world’s best-selling premium vehicle, EV or otherwise.

Tesla saw a total of 134,504 Model Y registrations in the U.S. through October and 112,314 Model 3 registrations, dominating EV registrations. The Chevy Bolt is third with 23,041 registrations.

The Lexus RX saw 98,297 registrations in the first 10 months of the year, 12% below the Model 3 and 27% below Model Y registrations for the same period. Automotive News Research & Data Center figures show the RX was the second-best premium vehicle in 2020 in the U.S., behind the Model 3.

Tesla still trails behind BMW and Lexus in total luxury vehicle registrations, but only by a mere 28,000 units for BMW, and 12,000 for Lexus.

The Model 3 sedan and Model Y crossover has definitively become two of the most sought-after vehicles from any premium brand this year, regardless of powertrain.

As for the EV category, the Model 3 and Model Y accounted for a whopping 65% of all EVs registered in the U.S. during the first 10 months of the year. The Model Y totalled 134,504 registrations, while the Model 3 punched in at 112,314.

Including the 12,272 Model S units registered, Tesla took home 69% of the electric vehicle market in the U.S. through October 2021.

According to Michelle Krebs, an executive analyst at Cox Automotive, Tesla is still the brand that most people think of when it comes to EVs.

During Tesla’s annual meeting of stockholders in October, CEO Elon Musk said that the Model Y should become the “best-selling vehicle of any kind,” globally.
