According to new world plugin vehicle sales for the month of October 2021, Tesla’s electric vehicles are leading the pack, based on data expertly compiled by José Pontes over at CleanTechnica.

The affordable and ultra-compact Wuling HongGuang Mini EV in China sold 39,128 units in October 2021, but when we look at combined Tesla Model Y units at 27,846 and Model 3 units at 16,533, Elon Musk’s company sold 44,379 cars in October 2021, leading sales from a specific automaker for the month.

Volkswagen’s ID.4 saw 14,568 in sales, while its ID.3 saw 7,079 sales for October 2021.

Musk said back in October at its annual meeting of shareholders the Model Y will likely become the “best selling vehicle of any kind globally,” with the goal possibly set to be achieved in 2023, when all four of its factories worldwide are in full operation.

Taking a look at worldwide plugin vehicle sales from top brands, with data compiled from January to October 2021, Tesla is leading the pack at 676,655 cars sold, with China’s BYD trailing in second at 409,933, followed by SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile at 349,362, and Volkswagen in fourth at 278,746.

According to Pontes, global plugin vehicle registrations increased 70% in October 2021 year-over-year, taking 8.8% of the overall automobile market. The data shows disruption happening in Europe and China, as sales of hybrid plug-in and all-battery vehicles are rising, despite chip shortages and supply chain constraints.
