Tesla Solar Installations Being Affected by Supply Chain Constraints

After Tesla expanded its solar roof installs throughout the U.S. in October, the company is now encountering some supply chain issues that will hamper its ability to meet production demands, according to an update shared on Monday.
Tesla said in an email last week that it would be delaying certain solar installations due to supply chain issues, according to a memo obtained by Electrek. The company stated that it estimated a 3 to 4 MW slowdown to solar installations, specifically including “PV retrofits,” as the email explains.
In the email, Tesla wrote, “We confirmed with the supply chain team that some supply constraints would impact our ability to schedule installations for PV retrofits.”

The company’s current solar installations tend to happen at a rate of around 80 or 90 MW per quarter, so 3 to 4 MW isn’t anything unmanageable. Still, Tesla has dodged supply chain issues in a variety of departments throughout the year, and it’s surprising to see its solar arm get hit amidst such growth.
Earlier this month, Tesla debuted new solar roof tiles that increase efficiency, requiring a smaller amount of installed solar tiles than previous iterations of the technology.
In September, Tesla also axed solar subscriptions, now only allowing customers to pay in cash and loan options.
