Quebec Government Meets with Tesla to Discuss Potential in Supply Chain

Québec’s government is doing talks with Tesla after announcing plans to invest $2-$3 billion CAD into the extraction of metals and the production of battery cells, according to Le Journal de Montreal (via electrek).

The government will likely work with a number of private companies to develop the sector within the province, which is likely to include Tesla with one minister’s office confirming that the government is in talks with the company.

Mathieu St-Amand, a press manager for Québec Economic Minister Pierre Fitzgibbon, shared that the minister had met with Tesla’s team as recently as last month.

In a statement, St-Amand said, “The minister met with Tesla executives during a mission in California last month. They discussed Québec’s place in Tesla’s supply chain.”

Earlier this year, Québec’s Lion Electric received a $100 million CAD investment to build a battery pack assembly plant in Saint-Jérôme, though the government will also look for companies to bolster the region’s entire supply chain process using the funding, all the way from mineral extraction to production

Québec’s investment plan is set to include companies to supply minerals like lithium, nickel and graphite, others to forge battery cells out of the minerals and still other companies yet to assemble electric vehicles using the batteries and deliver them.
