Tesla to Discuss Changing Free Default Color for Cars, Says Elon Musk

In response to a recent tweet saying the masses are “inundated” with seeing Tesla’s pearl white color on most of the company’s electric vehicles (EVs) out there and asking if the default “free” color could be changed, CEO Elon Musk said, “Good point, will discuss with team.”

While the response was certainly positive, it may take some time before we see Tesla cycle to another default color option. Tesla launched the Model 3, Model X, and Model S with ‘Solid Black’ as the default color option, before switching over to ‘Pearl White Multi-Coat’ for all cars, Model Y included, back in 2019.

Right now, a different paint option costs an extra $1,000 USD ($1,300 CAD) for ‘Solid Black’, ‘Midnight Silver Metallic’, and ‘Deep Blue Metallic’, and $2,000 USD ($2,600 CAD) for ‘Red Multi-Coat’ on the hot-selling Model 3 and Model Y.

As for the Model S and Model X, the ‘Solid Black’, ‘Midnight Silver Metallic’, and ‘Deep Blue Metallic’ color options cost an additional $1,500 USD ($2,000 CAD), and ‘Red Multi-Coat’ costs $2,500 USD ($3,300 CAD).

Having one color be the default, free option with others offered for a premium greatly streamlines the production process for Tesla, but there’s no reason why the default option can’t be changed every couple of years. The original tweet recommends midnight silver as a replacement for the current pearl white default.

The tweet also asked where ‘Floki’, Musk’s new pet puppy, was. The ‘Dogefather’ went on to promise pictures of the adorable Shiba Inu on Monday.
