Tesla Model 3/Y Sales in South Korea Surged in June

As Tesla’s reach continues to grow globally, the U.S. company continues to dominate import sales in a number of countries around the world, even beating out sales from companies like Mercedes-Benz and BMW in some markets.

Tesla sold a total of 4,860 cars in South Korea in June, landing the third-place spot for most Korean import cars sold, behind Mercedes-Benz (6,845 units) and BMW (6,503 units), according to Business Korea.

The California-based company sold a total of 2,884 Model 3 units and 1,972 Model Y units in Korea in June, up from just 126 Model 3 units in May, and following a record-breaking month in the country for the Model Y.

The news comes just a month after the Tesla Model Y topped Mercedes-Benz’s E-Class import sales, with the company having sold 3,461 units of the electric SUV delivered in May.

The Tesla Model Y was launched in Korea in February, coinciding with the first day of the Lunar New Year. Prior to that, Tesla called a South Korean local green car production incentive policy unfair, saying it went against the national equitable treatment principle under a Free Trade Agreement between Korea and the US (KORUS FTA).

Last September, Tesla’s sales also made up a 91 percent share of South Korea’s electric vehicle sales.
