Tesla Driver Charged with Reckless Driving in Detroit Semi-Truck Crash
Teslas are some of the safest vehicles currently available, though one crash in Detroit last Thursday has left behind a gruesome scene and a number of criminal charges.
On Thursday, Tesla Model Y driver, Jean Paul Guerrero, 22, crashed and got stuck beneath a semi-truck, as reported by Click On Detroit. The crash took place at Detroit’s Fort Street and Waterman Road, and has resulted in two charges for Guerrero: one felony charge for reckless driving causing serious injury, and another misdemeanor charge for driving with a suspended license.
Guerrero’s passenger ended up in the hospital in critical condition, with Guerrero also injured following the accident.
Esmeralda Barco, the 21-year old female passenger, remains in intensive care. You can click here to donate via a GoFundMe set up for her.
According to the latest update, “Esmeralda Barco has been getting step by step recovery, she is fighting to get well. She is still in intensive care. She says her name, her last name and what year we are in and also counted 1 to 15 with her mom.”
According to police, the Tesla was not likely to be in Autopilot mode, which has been said to make vehicles safer, despite investigations into the company’s driver assistance software from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The police stated that they would be further investigating the Tesla’s onboard SD card and black box, for any clues as to whether the vehicle was in Autopilot or not.
The NHTSA also announced it would be investigating the Detroit crash, in which speed was considered the critical factor causing the crash.
Another Tesla recently crashed into a patrol car, and it was later found that the vehicle had Autopilot activated during the crash.
