NIO’s Navigate on Pilot (NOP) Reviewed vs Tesla Autopilot
Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer NIO has seen a few highs this year, as it competes against Tesla for a spot in the world’s largest and most competitive auto market in China.
Monday, NIO shared a Geek Village Chief review of the company’s Navigate On Pilot (NOP) autonomous driving system, which was initially unveiled by the company in October 2020. The video, in Mandarin, has English subtitles added by NIO.
The advanced driver assistance system (ADAS), tested in the NIO ES8, is featured alongside tests of Tesla’s Autopilot. When compared to the latter, Geek Village Chief says Autopilot changes lanes too quickly, whereas NIO’s system does it more gradually.

In the video, the host shares that NIO’s NOP feature is best used for highway applications so far, adding that it performed better and less interrupted on longer drives.
While the video is specifically interrupted by certain zones in Beijing in which NIO’s NOP mode isn’t yet permitted, the host also shares moments from the vehicle’s Pilot Mode, similar to the driving assistance offered by Tesla’s Autopilot.
Like many automakers around the world, NIO dialled back production targets for this year due to the global semiconductor chip shortage in recent weeks. Still, the EV company outperformed rivals Li Auto and put up a good fight with Tesla’s sales in January, boding well for the company amid a burgeoning global EV market.
NIO also unveiled its first electric sedan earlier this year, the ET7, which will directly compete with Tesla’s Model S.
