Tesla Patent Seeks to Use EV Motor Waste to Heat Battery
On Friday, Tesmanian reported that Tesla had filed a patent earlier this year, published Thursday, for an electric motor waste heat mode to heat its own battery – a major improvement on previous motor cooling and battery heating systems.

Many critics have cited that it’s difficult for the powering batteries in electric vehicles (EVs) to operate efficiently at lower temperatures; meanwhile, the enormous amounts of heat generated by electric motors causes a number of engine issues, including the swift breakdown of motor-winding insulations, as well as the loss of magnetic properties to magnets in the rotor – both of which result in a loss in efficiency to the EV motor.
Tesla’s design update patent, originally filed March 9th, 2020, includes the design that solves both heating issues for the battery and motor cooling problems by displacing the waste heat from the motor to the powered battery. The design also includes a heat exchanger, pump, and fluid system, which aids the process of circulating heat throughout parts of the EV.
There’s definitely a lot going on for Tesla lately, but the company certainly never lets design or software updates fall to the backburner – and to the benefit of its fans and consumers, as well as generations to come.
