Tesla Model Y Now Registered with Chinese Government Ahead of Production
The long-anticipated Tesla Model Y is one step closer to becoming available to fans of the electric vehicle (EV) company in China.
Tesla has now completed its filing for the made-in-China (MIC) Model Y crossover, filed with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. The news was first reported in a tweet by Twitter user @Ray4Tesla, along with pictures from the filing as well as the Model Y itself.
The filing likely means that Tesla’s Shanghai factory can soon begin building and delivering the MIC Model Ys to customers. When asked about whether production would begin immediately or not, user @Ray4Tesla responded saying that the company would need to obtain a production permit first, and that production would likely begin later this month or early next month.
BREAKING: @Tealacn completed the filing of MIC Model Y & now it’s listed as registered with China Ministry of Industry & Information Technology. The photo below clearly shows it’s a Model Y made in 🇨🇳 cuz it carries the badge of 特斯拉 (Tesla in Chinese). Stay tuned for updates. pic.twitter.com/cXFUyJET0W

The timing is also right in line with the estimate according the Ray, which puts production for the MIC Model Y beginning before the end of this year, and deliver into early 2021.
While that’s still a long time for Chinese customers to wait for the MIC Model Y, it’s exciting to see deliveries inch a little bit closer. And who can even fathom how incredible Shanghai’s production will be in 2021 once Giga Berlin is complete, allowing Tesla to stop exporting vehicles overseas?
