Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini said on Thursday, October 29, that he had a “very positive and constructive” conversation with Elon Musk, and that Italy supports a swift EU approval of Tesla Assisted Driving, the European name for FSD (Supervised) already cleared in markets such as Latvia.
Salvini framed the talk around innovation and road safety, and he cast Italy as looking with “great interest” at assisted driving. That is political backing for a faster Europe-wide path, not a national Italian approval of the system on its own roads.
Musk replied later the same day with a short thank-you, giving Tesla watchers an on-the-record Elon response to hang the story on.
Tesla has already been clearing the system country by country under the Dutch RDW approval, including Slovakia on October 16 and other member states that recognized the Dutch decision. On most of its European sites the company now markets the feature as Tesla Assisted Driving rather than Full Self-Driving, after Germany and other markets pressed for clearer naming.
A minister-level push from Rome does not flip Italian roads overnight, but it puts another large EU government on the record for a quicker continent-wide green light while more member states keep recognizing the Dutch approval one by one.
