Tesla Japan says a new CHAdeMO adapter is on the way that will let owners charge at up to 130 kW on the roughly 14,000 CHAdeMO fast chargers across the country. In a post on X on Saturday, the company said the adapter goes on sale in Tesla shops starting in January 2027, the same month it gave this week for the V2L power adapter for the new Model 3 and Model Y.

The company pitched the launch as an answer to owner feedback. Tesla Japan opened with a line written in an owner’s voice, “I want to charge my Tesla at a fast charger near me, too,” and said it was responding to the many requests it had received. It added that the adapter will widen charging options away from home and make long trips more convenient and worry-free.

Tesla’s post doesn’t include a price, but Impress Watch reported on October 23 that the adapter, officially called the Fast Charging Adapter (CHAdeMO), will sell for ¥95,900 (about US$610) when it arrives in January.

That 130 kW figure is a big step up from the adapter Tesla sold in Japan before. According to Tesla Japan’s support page, the older CHAdeMO adapter was designed for a maximum output of 50 kW, which means the new one is rated for more than two and a half times as much power. Owners of the original adapter also needed a service center update just to reach that 50 kW limit on some Nichicon chargers, which had been capping output at 20 kW.

Nikkei reported the plan on October 16, saying Tesla stopped selling its earlier CHAdeMO adapter around 2024 and that the new one would increase the number of fast-charging ports Tesla drivers can use in Japan about twelvefold. Owners in North America once had a CHAdeMO option as well, and Tesla North covered that 50 kW adapter coming back in stock in 2021.

Tesla’s own charging network in Japan is much smaller by comparison. Impress Watch said the company runs 768 Supercharger stalls at 156 locations nationwide, and new sites keep arriving, like the Supercharger that opened in Tsu last month.

For drivers in Japan, CHAdeMO is the charger they’re most likely to find at convenience stores, roadside michi-no-eki rest stops and highway service areas. The adapter also fits Tesla Japan’s broader push this fall, which includes a charging support program worth up to ¥264,000 for new Model 3 buyers and a goal to launch FSD (Supervised) in Japan before 2026 ends.
