Tesla Investors Want Answers on Cybercab, Unsupervised FSD and HW3 Upgrades Ahead of Wednesday’s Call

Tesla’s retail shareholders want to hear about Cybercab, unsupervised FSD, Optimus and Hardware 3 upgrades on the company’s third-quarter 2026 earnings call, which starts Wednesday, October 21 at 4:30 PM Central Time (5:30 PM Eastern, 2:30 PM Pacific).

That’s according to Tesla’s shareholder Q&A page on Say, where investors submit and upvote the questions they want management to answer. Submissions close Tuesday, October 20 at 4:00 PM Eastern, so the order could still shuffle a bit before the call. Right now, the top seven questions ranked by shares represented all come from anonymous retail investors, and they read like this:

  1. “How does the Cybercab fleet scale past Austin, and what’s the regulatory path outside Texas given NHTSA’s open safety review?”
  2. “When can we anticipate FSD unsupervised in customer cars?”
  3. “When will the CyberCab be available for customer purchase/ownership?”
  4. “What’s the cost per Optimus unit, and what does the first paying customer look like?”
  5. “What’s the unit economics per paid robotaxi mile, and how does it compare to the thirty-cent target?”
  6. “Tesla has acknowledged that HW3 vehicles cannot support unsupervised FSD. When will owners know whether they can upgrade their hardware for free, and when will Tesla provide a clear plan?”
  7. “When do you anticipate Optimus will begin generating revenue?”

A little further down the list, shareholders ask why Tesla doesn’t build its own maps for FSD, how close its four factories are running to capacity, and whether a full-size passenger and cargo van is coming. A second Hardware 3 question asks Tesla for “an actual timeline for HW3 upgrades.”

The leaders haven’t changed much since Tesla opened the question box last week, when the Cybercab expansion question was already in first place. Tesla has taken retail questions through Say since its Q4 2021 call. Shareholders link a brokerage account to prove they own the stock, and questions are ranked by the number of shares behind them rather than raw votes. Management usually reads out a handful of the top questions during the call.

Several of these pick up where the Q2 call in July left off. Tesla said then that Cybercab production had started at Giga Texas, and Elon Musk said Tesla was scaling robotaxi carefully because “if we injure even one person, it will be worldwide headline news,” as we covered in our Q2 call recap. Paid public Cybercab rides started in Austin in September, and earlier this month Tesla’s Robotaxi account said more than 300 Cybercabs are now serving the city, with AI chief Ashok Elluswamy adding “Dallas soon.” The NHTSA review in that first question is real, too. The agency has given Tesla until October 30 to explain under oath how it certified a car with no steering wheel or pedals.

On Optimus, Musk told investors in July that it is “going to be the hardest product to scale manufacturing that we’ve ever made at Tesla,” and that the early part of the production ramp “will be quite flat and long.” Tesla also said it had pulled the Model S and Model X lines out of Fremont to make room for first-generation Optimus production. It hasn’t shared a price per robot or named an outside customer.

Hardware 3 owners, meanwhile, are still on FSD Lite, which reached older Intel Model S and Model X cars last week. Musk has acknowledged that HW3 would likely need an upgrade for owners who bought FSD, but Tesla hasn’t said how that would work or when. Wednesday’s call also lands about six weeks before Tesla’s December 3 annual shareholder meeting.
