Tesla and SpaceX Staff Follow Each Other on X as Merger Talk Grows

Employees at Tesla and SpaceX appear to be following each other on X in growing numbers, and it’s feeding fresh speculation about a Tesla and SpaceX merger. That’s according to a post from Big Tech Alert on X early Sunday, which says “MANY Tesla executives and rank and file employees have started following SpaceXAI executives, and vice versa, in the last 48 hours.” The post uses the company’s former name, SpaceXAI, which is now SpaceXSI. The same account noted Saturday night that SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell had started following Tesla’s official account.
To be clear, this is speculation. Following an account on X isn’t evidence of a deal, and the post doesn’t say who is following whom beyond the Shotwell example or why. Nobody at Tesla or SpaceX has said a merger is planned, and nothing has been filed.
Some unconfirmed online chatter has gone further and floated specific prices and deal structures. None of it traces back to Tesla, SpaceX or any official filing, so we’re treating it as noise for now. The timing is notable, though, since Tesla reports third-quarter results this week, with the earnings call set for October 21.
Elon Musk has left the door open before. At the September All-In Summit, he joked about the idea when asked why the two companies remain separate, then added, “You can imagine what action one might take when there’s so much close collaboration in so many areas.” That was a soft non-answer, not an announcement. More recently, Musk replied on X that “Optimus and Cybercab will be the vast majority of Tesla’s value,” without addressing merger talk.
The two companies already work closely together in several areas. SpaceX and Tesla are jointly building Terafab, a first-phase $16.8 billion chip factory in Grimes County, Texas. Tesla’s new Roadster was revealed at SpaceX’s rocket test site and uses cold-gas thrusters, and the first Cybercab was shown with an integrated Starlink dish.
Do you think a Tesla and SpaceX merger is coming, or are these follows just coworkers connecting on X?
