Cybercab Shortens Its Door Swing to Miss a Fence

A Tesla Cybercab in Austin opened its passenger-side door only partway when it was parked beside a fence, while the door on the open street side swung up fully. Tesla owner and YouTuber Dirty Tesla shared the photo on Thursday, then followed up Saturday with video he called “evidence” that the car limits the door swing on its own.
Cybercab didn’t open its door as wide to avoid the fence

The photo makes the difference obvious. The fence-side door stops at a shallow angle, short of the fence. The other door is fully raised.
Plenty of people online wanted proof it wasn’t a fluke or a door that just hadn’t finished opening. So he went back with a camera.

In replies, he added a few details. Asked why the door didn’t pop open for him automatically in the clip, he said it “only auto opens for the first person that walks up.” Asked whether the Cybercab’s B-pillar camera has always poked through the glass, he said it has on Cybercab “since they added the washers,” a reference to the camera washers spotted at Giga Texas in March.
The Cybercab has no steering wheel or pedals and uses two large butterfly-style doors, so a door that clips a wall, fence or another car is a real problem for a vehicle with no driver to watch for it. Riders hail it through the Tesla Robotaxi app, and Tesla just scaled its Austin Cybercab fleet past 300, so it’s increasingly pulling up to curbs, driveways and tight spots like this one.
What’s missing is any word from Tesla. Neither Tesla nor @robotaxi has commented on or shared the posts, and Tesla hasn’t said which sensors the doors use to judge clearance or whether this behaviour is new.
Still, it’s the kind of small detail that makes a driverless car feel considerate. Nobody wants to explain a scratched door to a car with no driver.
