Musk Says Grok Bot Will Use the Best AI Model for the Job

Elon Musk said late Tuesday that SpaceXAI’s Grok Bot will now use the best backend model for each task, naming Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5.5, MidJourney and Suno among the leading APIs it plans to use.
Musk announced the change in a post on X at 11:46 p.m. on October 6, 2026, writing: “Important note regarding Grok @Bot: Going forward, @SpaceX will use the best back end model for any given task, including Claude Opus 5.5, MidJourney, Suno and other leading APIs. Whatever is most likely to give you the best outcome.” The post quickly drew 35.9 million views, 66,000 likes and more than 4,500 replies.
The change effectively turns Grok Bot into a routing layer that can choose whichever model is most likely to produce the best result, rather than defaulting to xAI’s own models. Based on Musk’s list, Claude Opus 5.5 would handle heavy reasoning, MidJourney image generation and Suno music and audio tasks.
The backend switch follows a busy stretch for the assistant. SpaceXAI recently added voice calls, a 1Password vault and inline forms to Grok Bot, expanded its coding tools with Cursor, GitHub and Origin plugins, and started resolving support tickets for as little as $0.20 each. Tesla drivers may feel the change too: Grok Bot is expected to gain the ability to control a Tesla, which would put the multi-model backend to work for Tesla owners behind the wheel.
Not everyone welcomed the news. Several replies asked how data privacy will be handled when Grok Bot conversations are sent to third-party APIs such as Anthropic’s, with one user asking for a way to opt out. Musk did not elaborate, but the message was clear: for Grok Bot, the best model wins, no matter who built it.
