SpaceX has expanded its free Starlink Mini hardware rental to customers on every Residential plan in select countries, opening a perk that was previously reserved for top-tier Residential Max subscribers.
Invited customers receive an email with a “Claim Mini” button and a short survey, and the offer is limited to one kit per customer. According to an email Starlink sent to Residential customers received by Tesla North, the Mini is a hardware rental at no cost, separate from the home kit, so customers can take the same internet they use at home anywhere they go, from road trips to camping and boating. To keep the no-cost rental, the Mini must stay on Standby Mode or a Roam plan, and customers must remain on a Residential plan to stay eligible. Starlink notes that rental units may be refurbished.
The email lays out special rates for flexible Roam service. Standby Mode costs $15 US per month, while Roam 100GB is $60 US per month (typically $75), Roam 300GB is $88 US per month (typically $110), and Roam Unlimited is $160 US per month (typically $200). Customers who upgrade to Residential Max get the special rate improved to half off the standard price.
On the redemption page, customers sign in on the Starlink site and are offered the Mini as a rental bundled with their active Residential plan. Before confirming the order, they choose which discounted Roam plan the Mini starts on, and they can switch between Roam plans or pause with Standby Mode later from their account portal. The 100GB Roam tier fits occasional trips and camping, roughly a week of full-time use, with unlimited low-speed data after the cap. Frequent travelers and RVers get more room with the 300GB tier, which covers multiple trips a month and also includes unlimited low-speed data after the cap. Unlimited is the top tier, with unlimited high-speed data.
Starlink said in its support article that the no-cost rental is tied to keeping an active Residential plan. Customers who cancel their Residential plan, change their primary plan type, or cancel the Mini line must return the Mini Kit within 30 days or have the retail price charged to their payment method.
Some details remain unclear. Starlink has not said which countries are included or how invitation recipients are chosen, and no end date for the offer has been published. The hardware is a rental rather than a purchase, so invited customers never own the Mini.
The Mini rental is the latest in a string of Starlink perks. SpaceX previously launched free Starlink dish rentals in select states and offered a free Mini dish to Residential users in the U.S. and Canada, while outright buyers have seen SpaceX drop the Starlink Mini dish to its lowest price yet. For those not yet signed up, signing up for a Residential plan is the first step toward any future invitation.
Residential customers should also keep an eye on their inbox, since only invited customers can claim the offer.
