Tesla’s updated Model Y owner’s manual now lists text messaging among the in-car jobs Grok can handle when the Assistant personality is selected, documenting voice SMS before the feature has finished rolling out to customer cars.
Under Assistant mode, the manual says Grok supports phone calls, text messaging, media search and play, Controls panel search, common vehicle commands (climate, seat heat and cool, steering-wheel heat, glove box), and owner’s-manual questions, on top of navigation. The texting example is direct: “Text Mom saying on my way.” Screenshots of that Model Y manual page circulated on September 14, 2026, and Grok separately confirmed the same Assistant text-messaging language also appears in the latest Model 3 and Model S manuals for AMD-equipped cars, with the capability still awaiting the software push.
That puts cabin Grok a step beyond today’s live stack of navigation, calls, media, climate/seats, and manual Q&A, and it lines up with how Tesla has been pushing natural-language control elsewhere, from talking to Grok inside Cybercab to broader in-car assistant work after Grok’s Europe cockpit rollout. Owners watching commute workflows will also recognize the direction of Grok Bot-in-the-car talk, even though this manual entry is about cabin Grok SMS, not cloud agents.
The useful near-term check is the next AMD vehicle software drop that actually enables Assistant texting in cars, plus whether regional messaging apps beyond basic SMS show up in the same manual language once the feature is live.
