Tesla Energy said on September 9, 2026, that about 69,000 Powerwall owners across California are currently dispatching more than 500 megawatts to the grid, helping meet peak demand during today’s heatwave.

“Equivalent to the output of a power plant, but from Powerwalls already in people’s homes,” Tesla Energy wrote beside a live Virtual Power Plant dashboard graphic that tracks the statewide dispatch.

In a follow-up post, the company pointed readers to a live California VPP page so they can watch the event unfold in real time, underscoring how the network of home batteries is being called on as temperatures climb.

A Virtual Power Plant stitches together thousands of residential batteries so utilities can tap stored electricity when the grid is stressed, without building a new peaker plant. Tesla Energy’s California program has grown sharply from early pilot events that once counted a few thousand homes and tens of megawatts; today’s ~69,000-owner, 500-plus-MW call is a different scale.

The heatwave dispatch lands the same day Tesla Energy reminded owners that Storm Watch can automatically charge a Powerwall to full ahead of severe weather, and it follows earlier reporting that Tesla paid nearly $10 million to Powerwall owners in 2024 for VPP participation. Owners who want to see the live California event can open Tesla’s VPP dashboard from the company’s posts, while the broader Powerwall lineup remains the backbone of Tesla’s home energy pitch alongside solar.
