Tesla Quietly Discontinues Solar Roof to Focus Exclusively on Solar Panels
Tesla has officially pulled the plug on its Solar Roof tile product line, ending a decade-long experiment in integrated solar roofing to double down on traditional solar panels.
The company informed its network of certified third-party installers that Solar Roof tiles are no longer available for order and that it will only supply conventional solar panels moving forward. Internally, Tesla concluded that the custom tile product was simply not financially viable.
Tesla’s website has already reflected the change. The dedicated Solar Roof web address now redirects straight to the conventional solar panels page, and the product has been removed from the navigation menu, which now lists only Solar Panels, Powerwall, and Megapack.
First unveiled by CEO Elon Musk in late 2016 shortly before Tesla acquired SolarCity, the product was designed to replace traditional shingles with energy-generating glass tiles. However, the program was plagued by complex installation processes, supply chain hurdles, steep price hikes, and low adoption. While Musk initially targeted 1,000 installations per week, analysts estimate Tesla managed only around 3,000 total installations in the United States over its entire lifespan.
By sunsetting the labor-intensive tiles, Tesla is streamlining its residential energy strategy to focus on its higher-margin, easier-to-deploy traditional panels alongside its Powerwall storage units.
