Tesla Rolls Out FSD v14 Lite to Older Hardware 3 Vehicles

Tesla has officially started deploying its highly anticipated Full Self-Driving (FSD) Supervised v14 Lite update to early-access customers driving older vehicles. The software release, identified as version 2026.20.5.1, brings advanced driving capabilities to cars equipped with the company’s AI3 computer, also known as Hardware 3.

The update arrives after a 14-month wait for owners of older Tesla models, which have been running on the previous v12.6.4 architecture. According to Tesla’s AI team, the engineering challenge was significant because the AI3 hardware possesses only about 15% of the effective memory bandwidth found in the newer AI4 computer.

To bridge the technical gap, Tesla developers successfully distilled the intelligence from the AI4 software version into the older camera and compute configurations. This machine learning process essentially allows Hardware 3 to learn how to handle complex driving environments by using the advanced AI4 model as an explicit guide, unlocking features like reinforcement learning without requiring physical hardware retrofits.

Early testers receiving the update note substantial improvements in overall on-road behaviour. Initial feedback highlights a much smoother experience during highway travel, alongside sharper handling of merges, pedestrians, and traffic lights. The update also introduces new destination options, allowing vehicles to automatically navigate and park directly into driveways or curbside locations, alongside customizable speed profiles.

Tesla’s vice president of AI, Ashok Elluswamy, confirmed that the initial rollout is restricted to a narrow group of early-access drivers. The company plans to analyze real-world performance data from these initial drives before expanding the software download to millions of eligible Hardware 3 vehicles globally over the coming weeks.

“Nice work by the @Tesla_AI team!” said Elon Musk. “The AI3 computer only has ~15% of the effective memory bandwidth of AI4, so this was a tough challenge,” emphasizing the work it took to make this happpen.

– Distilled the intelligence from HW4 V14 into HW3. This allows HW3 to directly learn how to handle scenarios using HW4 V14 as a guide. This process unlocks the improvements that have been made to HW4 including Reinforcement Learning (RL) and offline models for HW3.

– Improved both proactive and reactive responsiveness across a wide variety of categories including navigation handling, merges and forks, pedestrian interactions, traffic lights, and vehicle cut-in scenarios.

– Improved general comfort in nominal scenarios through fewer false slowdowns, smoother steering and more consistent lane centering.

– Introduced parking, unparking, and reversing capabilities.

– Added Arrival Options for you to select where FSD should park: in a Parking Lot, on the Street, in a Driveway, or at the Curbside.

– Speed Profiles are now available at all times, to further customize driving style preference.
