Tesla Semi Proves Its Ice Stability in Alaska Testing

Tesla has shared a glimpse of its Semi truck undergoing intense winter trials, navigating slick, frozen roads in Alaska. Video footage posted by Dan Priestley, Tesla’s Director of Semi Truck Engineering, shows the all-electric Class 8 truck accelerating and maintaining control despite experiencing dramatic slides on the ice.

The demonstration highlights Tesla’s in-house Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) system. Priestley explained the technology on X, stating, “Let’s talk Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC). With high resolution sensing and precise multi-motor controls developed in-house, the Tesla Semi provides torque and stability even on the trickiest of winter surfaces.”

The Semi utilizes a tri-motor setup on its rear axles, allowing the onboard computer to adjust torque to individual wheels within milliseconds. This rapid response helps the truck maintain traction on hazardous winter surfaces far more effectively than traditional diesel trucks, which rely on slower mechanical setups.

To safely simulate real-world hauling challenges, the testing team loaded the trailer. Commenting on the setup, Priestley noted it is “Hard to see in the video but trailer is loaded. Concrete block over the fifth wheel and solid steel bars on the rest of the trailer. Low CG load for this kind of testing”.

As Tesla continues to build out its production capacity at its Gigafactory in Nevada, commercial fleets like PepsiCo and Walmart have already been logging millions of miles with the early units. This latest cold-weather demonstration underlines Tesla’s push to prove that its electric semi-truck can handle the harshest driving conditions imaginable.
