SpaceX has officially introduced its first-generation artificial intelligence satellite, named AI1. The new orbital platform is designed specifically to handle massive AI workloads directly in space.

By taking advantage of the vacuum of space, the satellite design solves major terrestrial energy and cooling challenges. The platform utilizes simplified Starlink V3 technology, massive 70-meter solar arrays for constant power, advanced laser links, and specialized space-friendly radiators.

According to technical specifications, the AI1 satellite delivers 150 kW of peak compute payload and averages 120 kW of compute payload. The compute provider components are also fully interchangeable.

To support the massive scale of this new venture, SpaceX announced plans for a new Gigasat factory in Bastrop, Texas. The company has secured over 1,000 acres of land with 11 million square feet of building potential to manufacture the solar components and AI satellites. Production at the Bastrop facility is scheduled to begin by the end of 2027.

Elon Musk outlined long-term goals for the project, which include scaling Starship to eventually launch a million-satellite constellation. The orbital infrastructure will tie into xAI to power future artificial intelligence models, such as Grok, amid an upcoming SpaceX initial public offering.
