Tesla Model Y Crowned Hong Kong’s Best-Selling Vehicle in May

Tesla secured the top spot as Hong Kong’s leading automotive brand in May, driven by surging demand for the Model Y.

According to new data from the Hong Kong Transport Department’s first registered vehicles report, the Model Y emerged as the best-selling vehicle across the region. The electric crossover outperformed all other passenger vehicles, beating out both battery-powered rivals and traditional internal combustion engine alternatives.

The achievement highlights a steady shift in the local automotive market, where buyers are increasingly moving away from petrol-powered cars in favour of electric options.

The success of the Model Y in Hong Kong is rooted in a combination of generous local tax incentives and practical urban design.

For years, Hong Kong has incentivised electric vehicle adoption through its “One-for-One Replacement” scheme. This initiative allows car owners to receive a substantial tax concession on the first registration tax when they scrap their old petrol vehicle and switch to a brand-new electric car. The policy significantly lowered the entry price for premium electric crossovers, making the Model Y highly competitive against traditional luxury brands.

Beyond financial incentives, the vehicle has proven uniquely suited to the dense urban environment of Hong Kong. Despite the challenges of high-rise living—where private home charging can be scarce and parking fees are among the highest in the world—local drivers have embraced the vehicle for its utility, interior space, and driving range.

Tesla has also heavily invested in the local charging infrastructure, building out a robust network of Superchargers across commercial malls and parking complexes to support high-utilisation drivers in the city.
