Tesla Model Y L Coming to America? It Was Just Caught Testing in California

Tesla has moved closer to bringing the longer, six-seat Model Y L to North America it seems. A camouflaged prototype of the vehicle was recently spotted testing at the company’s Fremont Factory, marking a significant step toward an eventual US release.
That’s according to a video uploaded to YouTube by ‘Servants life’ on May 29, 2026.
The Model Y L, which features a longer wheelbase and an expanded interior, was originally developed for the Chinese market to address common complaints about the standard Model Y’s cramped third row. While CEO Elon Musk previously expressed doubt about a US launch for the variant, the presence of these test vehicles in California suggests the company’s strategy has shifted to meet consumer demand.
While the Model Y L has expanded beyond China to other Asia Pacific markets, it still has not made its way to Europe or North America.
Industry analysts suggest that Tesla is currently conducting parallel validation testing at both the Fremont and Texas factories. This testing process is a standard precursor to ramping up full-scale production. Although Tesla has not yet provided official pricing, trim details, or a confirmed release date, current projections point to US production beginning as early as September 2026.
With the production of the Model X (and Model S) ending recently, the Model Y L is widely expected to fill the gap in Tesla’s North American lineup for a functional three-row vehicle. But honestly, it’s still not big enough. Tesla needs to build a true SUV or 7-seater minivan.
