T-Mobile Just Combined 5G and Starlink to Create Internet That Never Goes Down
T-Mobile wants to fix spotty office internet once and for all with a new service called SuperBroadband, and it’s pulling in SpaceX’s Starlink to do it.
The pitch is straightforward. Businesses lose money every time their internet goes down, and betting everything on a single provider is a gamble. SuperBroadband runs two connections at once — T-Mobile’s 5G network and Starlink’s satellite fleet. If one drops, the other picks up without any interruption.
André Almeida, a president at T-Mobile, said the goal is to cut through the mess that comes with managing internet across multiple locations. Instead of juggling contracts with a dozen different providers, businesses get one bill, one point of contact, and a promised uptime of 99.99%.
Aramark Destinations is one of the first companies to sign on. They operate in remote locations where laying cable isn’t really an option, so having a reliable connection without the usual headaches is a big deal for them.
Because it combines ground-based 5G with low-Earth orbit satellites, T-Mobile says SuperBroadband can reach every zip code in the U.S. That’s potentially a big deal for rural businesses, clinics, and anyone who’s been stuck with whatever slow, overpriced option happened to be available in their area.
T-Mobile handles the setup and support, so there’s no IT team required on the business side. It also comes with a dashboard called T-Platform that lets owners monitor their connection and hardware in real time.
