Virgin Atlantic Accelerates Starlink Rollout for Free Fleet-Wide Wi-Fi
Virgin Atlantic is speeding up the launch of free, high-speed Wi-Fi across its entire fleet using SpaceX’s Starlink satellite network. The rollout begins this May on the airline’s Airbus A350 aircraft, with the first connected flight scheduled to fly from London Heathrow to New York JFK.
The airline expects to have its entire A350 fleet equipped with the new satellite tech by early summer. From there, installations will move to its Boeing 787 and Airbus A330neo planes, with the goal of having every aircraft in the fleet connected by 2027.
The service will be completely free for members of Virgin’s Flying Club. Because Starlink uses satellites in low Earth orbit, the internet speeds are fast enough for passengers to stream video, play online games, and even make audio calls while in the air. Passengers will be able to connect as soon as they board rather than waiting until the plane reaches a certain altitude.|
“We were the first UK airline to announce free, fleet-wide Starlink Wi-Fi, and from May, we’re starting to deliver it for our customers. As the rollout gathers pace, we plan to deliver 100% Starlink connectivity across our fleet in 2027, as part of our focus on creating a brilliantly connected experience,” said Juha Jaervinen, Chief Customer Officer, Virgin Atlantic.
Virgin Atlantic is the first airline in the UK to commit to free, fleet-wide Starlink connectivity. The move aims to provide a reliable internet connection that matches the quality of home Wi-Fi, allowing travelers to use multiple devices like phones and laptops simultaneously during their journey.
