Google Maps AI Now Predicts EV Battery Life for 350 Android Auto Models
Google is rolling out a significant update to Maps that aims to eliminate range anxiety for electric vehicle (EV) owners. The tech giant is bringing its AI-powered charging features to over 350 car models that support Android Auto, allowing drivers to see real-time battery predictions and charging stop recommendations.
By integrating specific vehicle details such as weight and battery size with real-time traffic, weather, and road elevation, Google Maps can now forecast how much charge you will have upon arrival. Unlike standard navigation, this update suggests exactly when and where you should stop to charge based on your current battery level and the specific model you drive.
To access these features, drivers need to set up a vehicle profile within the Google Maps app by selecting their specific make, model, and year. Once configured, setting a destination in the car will display expected battery usage and provide an updated ETA that includes necessary charging time.
“We combine AI with advanced energy models that analyze car details alongside Maps’ real-time information about traffic, road elevation and weather,” Google stated regarding the rollout.
While this brings intelligent trip planning to a vast majority of EVs in the United States and Canada, Tesla owners likely won’t feel the need to switch. Tesla’s native navigation already handles Supercharger routing, charging duration, and battery pre-conditioning automatically. However, for the hundreds of other EV models across 15 different brands, this update provides a much-needed tool to streamline long-distance travel without juggling multiple third-party apps.
The feature is currently rolling out to compatible vehicles running Google Maps version 25.44 or higher.
