Tesla Launches New Model Y L in Australia and New Zealand
Tesla has officially expanded its lineup in Australia and New Zealand with the launch of the Model Y L, a new long-wheelbase variant designed specifically for larger families. This marks the first time a three-row Model Y has been available in these markets since the Model X was discontinued locally in 2020.
The Model Y L is more than just a seating upgrade; it features a chassis stretched by 150mm to create a genuine 2+2+2 six-seat layout. This configuration replaces the second-row bench with individual captain’s chairs, providing easier access to the third row and a more premium cabin experience.
More Space and Record-Breaking Range
By extending the roofline and wheelbase, Tesla has unlocked significantly more interior volume. The Model Y L offers a massive 2,539 litres of total cargo space with all rear seats folded.
Despite its larger size, the Model Y L is now the range leader for the lineup. Equipped with a higher-capacity battery, it delivers an impressive 681 km (WLTP) of range on a single charge. Performance remains a priority, with the dual-motor All-Wheel Drive system propelling the SUV from 0–100 km/h in just 5.0 seconds.
Premium Features and New Technology
The Model Y L introduces several “firsts” for the region, including Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability. This allows owners to use the car’s battery to power external appliances, tools, or e-bikes—a highly requested feature for camping and outdoor activities.
Key highlights of the new variant include:
-
Elite Comfort: Heated and ventilated seats in the first and second rows, with powered thigh cushions for the driver and powered recline for the third row.
-
Advanced Ride: New electronic damping and adaptive suspension (selectable between “Balanced” and “Rear Comfort”) paired with 19-inch Machina 2.0 wheels.
-
Tech Upgrades: A larger 16-inch front touchscreen, a new 8-inch rear display, and a 19-speaker immersive audio system.
-
Enhanced Safety: Added window and beltline airbags for the rear rows to maintain its 5-star ANCAP safety rating.
Pricing and Availability
In Australia, the Model Y L is priced from $74,900 AUD (before on-road costs), while New Zealand buyers will see a starting price of $83,900 NZD.
Tesla is also debuting a new “Cosmic Silver” exterior paint and a “Zen Grey” interior theme alongside this launch. Orders are open now on the Tesla website, with the first deliveries expected to arrive in the second quarter of 2026.
