Tesla’s Model Y has taken the crown as Australia’s best-selling passenger vehicle for September, according to new sales data from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI).

Figures from the VFACTS report show Australians purchased 106,891 new vehicles in September 2025, up 6.3% from August and 10.1% from a year earlier — the biggest monthly sales increase so far this year. Electric vehicles played a major role, with EVs capturing a record 11.3% of the market.

The Tesla Model Y led the EV charge, notching 3,927 sales during the month — more than double its total from September 2024. That result placed the Model Y in third overall across all vehicles, behind the Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger pickups, while making it the leader in the passenger vehicle segment. Tesla sold a total of 4,663 vehicles in Australia for the month, up 76% year-over-year, enough to push the brand into ninth place among all automakers, ahead of MG, Subaru, and Chery.

The official Tesla Australia and New Zealand account (@TeslaAUNZ) confirmed the news in a post on X, celebrating the Model Y’s milestone achievement.

September was also a landmark month for Tesla in the region beyond sales. At the beginning of the month, the company launched its refreshed Model Y Performance in both Australia and New Zealand, offering updated styling and features. Later in the month, Tesla began its public rollout of Full Self-Driving (Supervised) in Australia, after a soft media launch in late August. Since then, Australians and New Zealanders have already driven more than 1 million kilometers with the driver-assistance system, underlining both strong interest and rapid adoption.

With EV adoption accelerating and Tesla adding both refreshed vehicles and advanced driver-assist technology into the mix, the Model Y’s breakout September performance highlights how quickly the brand is cementing its place in Australia’s mainstream auto market.
