Tesla FSD 14 ‘Feels Sentient,’ Second Biggest Update Ever: Musk

Elon Musk is once again hyping Tesla’s next big Full Self-Driving (FSD) update, saying version 14 of the software “feels sentient” and will be the biggest update to the advanced driver assistance system behind version 12.

The comment came in response to a clip of William Blair analyst Jed Dorsheimer praising Tesla’s Robotaxi rides, saying they “felt a lot more like a person was driving,” while Waymo’s service still feels more robotic.

Musk added in a follow-up post that Dorsheimer was riding in a Robotaxi running on version 13, noting: “Version 14 is the second biggest update to Tesla AI/Autopilot ever after V12. It feels alive.”

Currently, Tesla’s Robotaxis operate on a private branch of FSD 13 that is roughly six months ahead of what subscribers have access to. Musk has previously confirmed that improvements from the Robotaxi builds will eventually flow into public releases.

According to Musk, FSD 14 will feature a model with 10 times more parameters than the current version, which he says will deliver “a dramatic gain” in performance. He also noted that once Tesla confirms real-world safety, the update will “nag you much less,” reducing the frequency of driver monitoring alerts.

FSD 14 is currently in the training and testing phase, and Elon Musk has suggested a potential public release in late September — assuming everything goes smoothly. Given the scope of changes Musk has hinted at, FSD 14 is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious updates to Tesla’s autonomous driving system yet.

With Tesla’s Robotaxi service set to open to the public next month and FSD 14 looming, the company is clearly ramping up its push to make self-driving feel as natural — and human-like — as possible.
