Tesla Cybertruck Impresses in IIHS Crash Test Footage

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has officially conducted its first-ever crash test of the Tesla Cybertruck, and according to new footage released this week, Tesla’s polarizing all-electric pickup did pretty well. This follows the vehicle’s earlier 5-star overall safety rating from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) back in February.
The IIHS, an independent nonprofit organization known for its rigorous crash testing and safety research, released footage showing the Cybertruck undergoing frontal collision tests. Check out some of the crash test footage below, as shared by longtime Tesla watcher Sawyer Merritt (@SawyerMerritt):
While the full IIHS safety report and the organization’s overall rating for the Cybertruck have yet to be made public, early visuals are already making waves online — highlighting how Tesla’s angular exoskeleton and structural safety systems hold up under extreme impact.
Notably, the NHTSA previously awarded the Cybertruck the lowest overall probability of injury of any pickup it’s tested, along with a class-leading 12.4% rollover risk, thanks to its ultra-low center of gravity and reinforced chassis.
As Tesla pushes for broader adoption of its next-gen electric truck, the company is also enticing buyers in the U.S. with 0% APR financing on the Cybertruck when paired with the Full Self-Driving (Supervised) add-on. It’s a clear move to stoke demand and get more Cybertrucks on the road.
With both the NHTSA and (potentially) the IIHS giving it top marks, the Cybertruck is shaping up to be one of the safest pickups ever made — steel curves and all. Stay tuned to find out how the IIHS rated Tesla’s Cybertruck when the organization publishes its full report.
