U.S. EV Sales Hit Record Highs in 2024, Tesla Leads the Pack Again
Sales of electric vehicles in the U.S. reached new highs in 2024, with 1.3 million EVs sold throughout the year—an increase of 7.3% compared to 2023.
According to data from Cox Automotive’s Kelley Blue Book, EVs accounted for 8.1% of all new car sales, up from 7.8% the previous year.
In the fourth quarter of 2024 alone, 365,824 EVs were sold, marking a 15.2% increase year-over-year and setting a new quarterly sales record.
Tesla’s Model Y and Model 3 remained the best-selling EVs, accounting for over 40% of total sales, but both models saw sales declines. Tesla sold an estimated 37,000 fewer vehicles compared to 2023.
General Motors and Honda had strong years, adding nearly 80,000 EV sales combined. Honda’s new Prologue EV, which launched in 2024, sold over 33,000 units in its first year.
Ford’s Mustang Mach-E was the best-selling EV not made by Tesla, followed by Hyundai’s Ioniq 5. The Tesla Cybertruck debuted as the fifth best-seller, just ahead of the Ford F-150 Lightning. That’s pretty good for debuting this year for the Cybertruck.
Of the 68 EV models tracked in the U.S., 24 saw sales growth, while others, like the Chevrolet Bolt and Mazda MX-30, were discontinued.
While EV sales are still increasing, the rate of growth has slowed compared to the previous year’s 49% spike. Generous incentives, competitive lease deals, and new model launches have driven sales.
Cox Automotive predicts another record-breaking year for EVs in 2025, with sales potentially making up 10% of total vehicle sales.
