Tesla Achieves 50 Millionth 4680 Battery Cell Milestone at Giga Texas

Tesla has announced another major milestone today. After reaching 5 million drive units produced at Giga Nevada, the company has now announced it has produced its 50 millionth 4680 battery cell at Giga Texas.

“Congrats 4680 Cell Manufacturing team on building their 50 millionth battery cell at Giga Texas!”, said the company on X just moments ago, while sharing a picture of employees.

Key 4680 battery cell milestones include:

  • 1 Millionth Cell Production: Achieved in January 2022.
  • 10 Millionth Cell Production: Reached in June 2023.
  • 20 Millionth Cell Production: Announced in October 2023.
  • 50 Millionth Cell Production: Celebrated in June 2024.

The production rate has accelerated dramatically over time. Initially, it took Tesla 16 months to produce the first 10 million cells, averaging about 562,500 cells per month. However, the next 10 million cells were produced in just 4 months, demonstrating a significant increase in production capacity.

The 4680 cells, named for their dimensions of 46mm in diameter and 80mm in height, are crucial to Tesla’s electric vehicles, including the Model Y (but not all have 4680 battery packs) and Cybertruck. These larger cells are designed to offer higher energy density and power output, enhancing vehicle performance and range.
