Tesla Exec Tom Zhu Reportedly Heading Back to Lead China Business

Tom Zhu has been a pivotal figure in Tesla’s expansion in China since joining the company in 2014. His roles have included Director of Tesla China’s Supercharger project and Vice President of Tesla Global and President of Greater China, contributing significantly to Tesla’s rapid growth in the Chinese market.

Under Zhu’s leadership, Tesla has made substantial advancements in China, including the construction of the Shanghai Gigafactory, a research and development center, and experience centers, along with the launch of several models tailored to meet the needs of the Chinese market. From selling 20,000 vehicles in 2016, Tesla’s sales figures in China soared to 700,000 by 2023.

Zhu’s return to oversee the Greater China region indicates Tesla’s renewed focus on the Chinese market, one of its most crucial overseas markets and a key driver for future growth, according to local Chinese media reports. Despite a global economic downturn, the Chinese automotive market continues to grow rapidly. Tesla aims to solidify its position in China under Zhu’s leadership and drive further success.

The resurgence of Zhu heralds a new phase of growth for Tesla’s operations in China. His extensive experience and exceptional leadership skills are expected to lead the Tesla China team to greater achievements.

The news comes amidst rumours of Tesla cutting even more staff, as it continues to trim company fat.

What’s next for Tesla in China? Maybe Zhu will be leading the rumoured refresh of the Model Y and the launch of Full Self-Driving (FSD)? Elon Musk admitted the August 8 date (8/8) to announce the company’s Robotaxi was partly picked because the numbers are lucky in China (and they are also the birthday of his triplets).
