Tesla Cybertruck Highway Range Test: 100% to Dead [VIDEO]

Cybertruck out of spec

In a recent live-streamed event on late Wednesday evening and into early Thursday, Tesla’s Cybertruck underwent a comprehensive highway range test, in a video that spanned five hours. This is from the ongoing Cybertruck coverage from Kyle over at Out of Spec Motoring.

The test, conducted by Out of Spec Motoring, aimed to determine the real-world range capabilities of the dual-motor all-wheel-drive Tesla Cybertruck.

During the live stream, the team at Out of Spec Motoring embarked on their typical 70 mph highway loop test, a standard procedure for evaluating the range of electric vehicles. The test was conducted overnight to avoid traffic and ensure accurate results. The team was committed to running the Cybertruck until it was completely out of charge, intending to use every bit of the vehicle’s battery capacity.

The Cybertruck used for the test was the Foundation Series all-wheel drive with massive 35-inch all-terrain tires on 20-inch wheels. Predictions for the range varied among the team, with guesses ranging from 279 to 306 miles. The goal was to exceed the official EPA range rating for this particular configuration. The end result? 254 miles or 408 km. What do you think about this range test that took place in 45F weather (about 7C)?

Throughout the test, the team shared insights into the Cybertruck’s performance, including its charging capabilities and interior features. They noted the vehicle’s charging time and discussed various aspects of the Cybertruck, such as the legroom, headroom, and the unique middle seat design.

The live stream also included a detailed look at the Cybertruck’s charging process, with the team monitoring the charging speed and discussing the vehicle’s battery temperature and charging curve. They highlighted the importance of software updates in optimizing the vehicle’s charging performance.

Here are some comparable range tests from Cybertruck rivals:

  • Rivian R1T Large Pack (135kWh) with 20″ AT tires: 289 miles (465km)
  • Ford F-150 Lightning Platinum (131kWh) with 22″ tires: 258 miles (415km)

It would have been interesting to see the Cybertruck, Rivian R1T and F-150 Lightning all take this range test at the same time, on the same route under the same conditions.

At the final end, the steering got really heavy and the Cybertruck started beeping non-stop. The screen said there was a “critical steering issue” and then said it had to be charged.
