Tesla Sets Record Sales in Nordic Countries in 2023, Led by Model Y
Tesla has set new records in the Nordic region, becoming the most-sold vehicle brand in Iceland and leading the electric vehicle (EV) market in Denmark, Sweden, and Norway in 2023. This achievement comes despite challenges in labor relations and infrastructure.
In Iceland, Tesla broke a 33-year record, becoming the most-sold vehicle brand across all segments. “Kærar þakkir til allra Tesla eigenda á Íslandi!” said the company on X.
In Denmark, the Tesla Model Y emerged as the best-selling car of 2023, with Tesla becoming the most-sold car brand overall. “What a crazy year 2023 was in Denmark,” said Kim Gaba Jensen, Regional Lead at Tesla, on LinkedIn.
He highlighted the significant growth, noting, “In Denmark, the number of Tesla vehicles on the road in fact more than doubled from 1st of January till 31st of December from 29,752 to 59,559.”
Sweden also saw impressive growth, with Tesla registering 20,330 cars, a 121.3% increase compared to the previous year. “Model Y became Sweden’s best-selling car, all categories, with 16,415 cars registered,” said Jens Stark, Market Lead at Tesla, thanking customers and the Tesla team for the record-breaking year.
In Norway, Tesla topped car sales for the third straight year, with its market share rising to 20.0% from 12.2%, according to registration data. “Almost five out of six new cars sold in Norway last year were powered by battery only,” reported Reuters.
Despite conflicts with labor unions over collective bargaining rights, Tesla’s sales remained unaffected. “We see no signals indicating that,” said Christina Bu, head of the Norwegian EV Association, regarding the impact of labor disputes on sales.
The Tesla Model Y was the most popular model in Norway, ahead of Volkswagen’s electric ID.4 and the Skoda Enyaq. Bu predicted that the market share of electric cars could rise to 95% in 2024, nearing the parliament’s goal of 100% by 2025.
Tesla’s dominance in the Nordic EV market is a testament to the growing popularity of electric vehicles and the company’s ability to meet increasing demand. Earlier today, Tesla announced record Q4 and total year deliveries for 2023, exceeding its target of 1.8 million cars delivered.
“An electric car should be a real option for anyone… no matter if you live in a building with parking or no parking,” said Oslo resident Inger Sophie Finch, highlighting the need for more accessible infrastructure.
