New Tesla Model 3 Includes HEPA Filter–and Bioweapon Defense Mode?

Tesla’s newest Model 3 ‘Highland’ finally includes a feature other vehicles in the company line up include: a HEPA filter.

A HEPA filter (High-Efficiency Particulate Air), is designed to trap particulate matter and various airborne contaminants. HEPA filters are capable of capturing particles as small as 0.3 microns in diameter with a 99.97% efficiency, which includes pollutants such as dust, pollen, mold spores, bacteria, and some viruses. They are commonly used in various applications, from household air purifiers to medical facilities, to ensure a cleaner and safer air environment.

HEPA filters function by forcing air through a fine mesh that captures harmful particles. The filters are composed of a mat of randomly arranged fibers, typically made from fiberglass. These filters allow Tesla to enable its Bioweapon Defense Mode for the Model Y, Model S and Model X.

The original Model 3 did not have enough room for a HEPA filter. But the new Model 3 ‘Highland’ does, as shown by Tesla’s Weibo account advertising the “beginning of winter” (via @Tslachan). The image above shows a new Model 3 indicated by the ambient lighting strip that’s at the back of dash near the windshield. The new Model Y refresh with ambient lighting has its strip behind the screen as seen below:

It’s unclear if the new Model 3 supports Bioweapon Defense Mode, but a recent screenshot shared @VidasL shows the Model 3 and the Bioweapon Defense Mode within the Tesla app, apparently shared by a French owner. I guess we’ll find out soon enough as news percolates on X and the web.
