Tesla Model 3 RWD Muffled Audio Fix: Remove this Speaker Kit

Last week Tesla North told you about the muffled navigation audio issues related to a recent 2023.26.8 software update.

We can now confirm how to fix this audio issue, as it’s caused by an aftermarket audio kit from Hansshow that unlocked dormant speakers in the entry Model 3. Canadian Tesla North reader Jim told us his Model 3 RWD no longer has muffled audio after his Hansshow audio kit was removed after taking it into a Tesla service center.

Tesla technicians did some troubleshooting then proceeded to disconnect the aftermarket audio kit’s wiring splice and reverted the connections back to the factory settings. They also conducted several tests and checks, according to his invoice shared with Tesla North:

  • Diagnosis: Low Voltage Circuit Integrity Check
  • Glove Box (Non-Heat Pump) (Remove & Replace)
  • Cover – Knee Airbag – Front Passenger (Remove & Replace)
  • Perform Post-Repair Validation Test Drive
  • X057 Connector Soft Set – Inspection

The customer was billed a total of CAD $588.00 before tax, broken down into multiple components:

  • Diagnosis: CAD 315.00
  • Glove Box Replacement: CAD 113.40
  • Knee Airbag Cover Replacement: CAD 75.60
  • Post-Repair Test Drive: CAD 63.00
  • X057 Connector Inspection: CAD 21.00

It’s worth pointing out Jim didn’t get an option to not proceed with the fix. Tesla just did the work and then said here’s your final invoice.

This is an expensive fix as Tesla doesn’t cover issues affected by third-party add-ons. If you are dealing with this problem on a Model 3 RWD, you may want to seek a third party that helped you install the kit to reverse and remove the latter.

What’s interesting about this muffled audio issue is some people who are dealing with the problem—don’t have a Hansshow audio kit installed. But it’s clear the add-on does cause the muffled audio issue after the latest software update has been applied.

Are you dealing with any audio issues in your Model 3 RWD right now?

I am on 2023.26.8 and this weekend, while driving in light rain, when the wipers were running intermittently (both in automatic and manual mode), there would be a strange buzz in a right speaker between wipes. Initially I thought it was a vibration but finally it seems to be from a speaker. Never had such a behavior before the more recent software update. As soon as the wipers turned fully off, the buzz went away.

I’m having the same issue, I believe, with my 2018 Tesla Model 3. The navigation audio is muffled, and sounds as if it’s coming from the subwoofer (only) making fairly impossible to understand. Tesla service suggested they could replace the amplifier for $700 but wouldn’t guarantee that would fix the problem. I declined since there was no guarantee this would solve my issue. I’ve read about others who’ve had a loose connection on the X057 connector that caused this issue. Do you know where this connector is located and is it something I could check myself?
