Uber Japan to Launch Fleet of 100 Tesla Model Y EVs
Uber Japan, Hinomaru Kotsu, and Tesla Motors Japan have announced the integration of Tesla’s Model Y, into Uber Japan’s online taxi dispatch service, Uber Premium. The collaboration aims to deploy a total of 100 Tesla Model Y vehicles across Tokyo’s 23 wards by the end of 2024, marking a significant step towards greener urban transportation.
The Tesla Model Y, renowned for its impressive range, superior driving performance, quiet operation, and premium interior and exterior, will be the first electric vehicle of its kind to be introduced into Japan’s taxi and hire industry. The initiative will kick off in November with the deployment of 30 Model Y vehicles at Hinomaru Kotsu’s offices in Setagaya, Edogawa, and Adachi wards.
Following this initial rollout, the deployment will extend to affiliated companies of Hinomaru Motors’ wireless group, with the aim of expanding the total number of vehicles to 100 by the end of 2024. All Model Y vehicles will be exclusively allocated for Uber Premium.
Uber app users will be able to specifically request a Model Y vehicle through a dedicated menu on the car model selection screen. In addition, Hinomaru Kotsu plans to offer Tesla’s charging solutions at its offices in Adachi and Setagaya wards from November onwards.
This collaboration represents a significant stride towards sustainable urban mobility, leveraging Tesla’s cutting-edge electric vehicle technology to provide a premium, eco-friendly transportation option for Uber users in Tokyo.
Back in the fall of 2021, Hertz signed a major deal with Tesla for 100,000 Model 3 vehicles and later it was expanded to a deal with Uber for drivers to rent the EVs for ridesharing.
