Tesla Model Y Speeds to Second Place in Australia Car Sales

The Tesla Model Y has emerged as a prominent contender, securing the position of the second highest-selling car during June 2023 in Australia.

According to the latest data, a total of 124,926 new vehicles were sold in Australia during this period, marking a substantial increase of 25.0% from June 2022 and 8.2% from the first half of 2023. The sales figures of June 2023 also surpassed any recorded since 2018.

Tony Weber, the Chief Executive of the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI), expressed optimism about the continuous growth in sales despite supply constraints. He stated, “The end of the financial year has traditionally been a strong month for vehicle sales. Indications from our members are that demand for new vehicles remains solid, but the supply is not yet at a point to meet this demand.”

Moreover, sales of battery electric, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid vehicles have seen a consistent rise. They accounted for 16.6% of the June sales and 7.4% of the new vehicle sales during the first half of 2023. Among them, the Tesla Model Y recorded 5,560 sales, standing just behind the Toyota Hi-Lux gasoline pickup truck that sold 6,142 units.
