A man has died following a shooting at a Tesla Supercharger station in the Edgewater Public Market parking lot on Wednesday morning.

Initially, it was believed that the altercation between the two Tesla drivers was over the charging station in the 5500 block of W. 20th Avenue, but further investigation revealed this not to be the case, according to Sgt. Bob Brink of the Edgewater Police Department (EPD), reports Denver7.

The 33-year-old Denver resident was shot around 9:40 a.m. and later pronounced dead at the hospital, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Jenny Fulton informed Denver7. The 38-year-old shooter left the scene before calling 911 to report the incident, and has since been detained.

EPD initially believed that the charging station spot was the cause of the altercation, but after speaking with witnesses and further investigation, they no longer think this was the case. The suspect and victim are not believed to have known each other.

According to Brink, the armed victim approached the shooter’s vehicle when the altercation and shooting took place.

A law enforcement source told Denver7 that the shooter called 911, reporting that he had used mace on the victim before opening fire. He was later detained in the 1500 block of Xavier Street. One of the individuals involved owned the vehicle, while the other was renting.

The investigation is ongoing, with the Edgewater Police Department working in partnership with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and the 1st Judicial District Attorney’s Office Investigation Unit. The identity of the victim will be released by the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office once the family has been notified.

Authorities have confirmed there is currently no threat to the public.

Earlier this week, Tesla announced it is now operating over 5,000 Supercharging sites around the world.
