40 Tesla Megapacks Arrive to Power Genex Battery Project in Australia
Tesla’s energy storage technology is set to power yet another battery project in Australia, this time in the country’s northeasternmost state.
A set of 40 Tesla Megapacks has arrived at a Genex battery project in Queensland, Australia, as detailed in a press release shared on Monday.
Originally reported in 2021, the arrival of Tesla’s Megapacks represents the battery site nearing operational status, and adds to the country’s handful of energy storage sites.
The project, located in Rockhampton and dubbed the Bouldercombe Battery Project (BBP), will feature 50MW/100MWh of power and is expected to become operational in the second half of this year.
The Tesla Megapacks were shipped to the site from the U.S. company’s Sparks, Nevada Gigafactory, and they officially mark the final piece of energy equipment needed to establish the project.
Tesla is set to oversee the project using its proprietary algorithmic bidding software, Autobidder, which is expected to help maximize revenues and manage peak energy times on an annual basis.
The site will add to over a billion dollars in renewable energy projects established by Genex, sprinkled across Australia.
The news comes after Tesla’s “Big Battery” became operational in Victoria in December 2021, and after another Megapack-powered energy storage project debuted in Hornsdale, South Australia in 2020.
