Now Live: Tesla Superchargers Open for Non-Tesla Cars in the U.S. [VIDEO]
Earlier this month, Tesla and the White House announced the electric automaker’s Supercharger network would soon open at select sites to non-Tesla vehicles.
Today, the non-Tesla Supercharging pilot has gone live in the United States, allowing other EVs to charge their vehicles with a CCS adapter.
Last week, Tesla started retrofitting numerous Superchargers with a ‘Magic Dock’, that allows a CCS Combo 1 Adapter to be used for compatible vehicles at Superchargers.
Tesla Superchargers are the biggest advantage for the company’s owners. As for other benefits for Tesla owners? The company explains, “as a Tesla driver you benefit from the seamless integration of charge post and vehicle, optimized route planning and battery pre-conditioning. With your Tesla, you’ll also have access to the lowest Supercharger pricing.”
How to charge a non-Tesla EV at a Supercharger? Here are the instructions according to Tesla:
- Download the Tesla app (version 4.18.0 or higher) for iOS or Android and create a Tesla Account.
- Select ‘Charge Your Non-Tesla’ and find your Supercharger site.
- Add your payment method, select a stall, unlock the adapter, plug-in your car, and tap ‘Start Charging.’
- Select ‘Stop Charging’ to complete your session.
- Note: If you also own a Tesla, go to your profile in your Tesla app and swipe to find ‘Charge Your Non-Tesla.’
Tesla’s video below shows how to undock the CCS adapter from the Magic Dock. You need to push the handle into the dock, then pull it out to remove the CCS adapter attached to the Tesla charger:
