SpaceX Starlink Launches on Remote Island of Mayotte

SpaceX continues to bolster its network of regions where Starlink’s low-Earth orbit satellite internet is available, and now an island off the coast of Africa has gained access to the service.

Starlink is now available on the remote island of Mayotte according to SpaceX’s coverage map for the satellite internet service, noticed @Nathan Owens.

Mayotte, a French territory, sits off the coast of Mozambique west of Madagascar, near the three islands of Comoros. The service still displays as “Coming Soon” on Comoros, Mozambique and Madagascar, with Mayotte currently being the only nearby place to the remote island areas where it’s available.

The news is just the latest in SpaceX’s rapid expansion of Starlink to a number of super remote regions of the Earth. Most recently, the company launched Starlink on the island of Reunion to the east of Madagascar.

In November, Starlink went live on both of the super remote Easter Island and Pitcairn Island, while also adding connectivity for researchers at the North Pole and the South Pole.

The news also comes just a day after reports showed that SpaceX was approved to test new Starlink hardware, suggesting that the company’s next generation of dishes will be slightly larger than the current second-gen models.

In December, SpaceX announced that it had reached 3,000 Starlink satellites in operational positions, though it continues to launch more to continue expanding its orbital satellite network, and launched more satellites early this morning.
